Talk Talk - Is this legal??

I have been with Talk Talk since July of 2006 just after they started their free broadband offer and I was oringinally on their talk plan 2 offer but upgraded to their talk international plan at £24.99 about 3 months into my contact.

As my circumstances have now changed, I called them to change my package to the £16.39 plan (I'm well out of my 18 months min contract now) only to be told that if I change my plan I will have to agree to another 18 month min contact!!

Is this legal? surely I can chop and change my plan now I am out of my 18 months? but when I put this to the advisor on the phone she just said no, you have to agree to another 18 months if I want to change my plan!

I think this is so wrong and makes me so angry I'm considering moving to another supplier.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Regards
Simon

Yes its legal. It's not uncommon in the telecommunication that if you change your plan (this is something that o2 and most mobile providers) then it means you start a new contract term.
  • It's funny you should say that because I've been with O2 for a few years now and have changed my tarriff up and down several times and never had to agree to a new minimum term contract!

I would get back in touch and tell them you are considering leaving talktalk due to change in circumstances, however you will consider staying if they allow the tarif change without the 18 month tie in.If they decline you have a choice to make,ie you let them call the shots or you go to another supplier.

I used to take this rubbish from companies as it was always a pain to change. However even the big companies will start feeling the credit crunch soon so will have to make their packages even more attractive and treat their exhisting customers better or loose them.

I apply the same principals to annual car, home and breakdown insurance. When I get the renewal I contact my current company and ask if they will match other suppliers ie look after their loyal customers. Where they point blank refuse, I find someone else.

There are lots of other phone suppliers out there who will be happy to take your money if Talktalk are happy to loose your custom.

    I would go else where.

In all fairness though talktalk is so cheap, if your happy with their service, which i am, i do not think you can beat their deals at all. Especially when you consider the charge to go back onto the BT network. 18 months flies by anyway.
