Help - Insurance question

Hi everyone,
My parents brought a car from Ireland and got a cover note on the car which expired two weeks ago and unfortuantely due to a family tradegy, they forgot to renew. My dad has fully comprehensive insurance (on another vehicle) and he drove the car (with the expired cover note) to work this morning - this afternoon it was stolen.
where do we stand?
please help

Oh.
That's not good.
Sorry

Bright side? He wasn't in an accident and therefore isn't being prosecuted for driving without insurance... was it off-road when stolen? That will help, because I assume there will be no proof of him driving without insurance.
As for claiming, well as far as I know you can't
. But you should still follow it up with the Police and just tell them it was stolen from off-road..? Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
I'm not quite clear on this - they obtained a cover note which expired but was not renewed?
Was the cover note simply a temporary cover or was it issued because a full year policy had been set up and the permanet documents were to follow?
If it was the former, the loss is not covered. If it was the latter it may be covered.0 -

Sorry to say, but with no policy covering the car I don't think there is anybody to turn to.
His own policy may have covered him third party is he had had an accident in the car and somebody else made a claim against him, but as it was stolen I suspect there is nothing he can do."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0 -
Do you think it would be worth starting the insurance today? The cover note was temporary. I am so worried where do we stand if this car is involved in accident or something. We have a crime number and reported the theft and the car was stolen from his works car park.0

No point in insuring it, it won't cover the theft, and in any case you can't insure a car that is not in your possession. If the car is involved in an accident it will be up to the driver or the MIB to sort it out. You've reported it stolen, the worst that can happen to him is a charge of driving without insurance.0 -

i don't think there would be any charge to answer of driving without insurance since the driver wasn't caught doing so even though it may have been the case.
I'd imagine that a car being stolen while uninsured is pretty much gone with no one liable to pay out the cost of the car. Unless the car is recovered i think you'll need to write off the cost of the car.
However if your insurance co gave you a note for 2 weeks, why would it expire? By that i mean, if you told them about the additional car then why wouldn't they just issue a new certificate?
If they knew you had purchased the car and that it required insurance I can't quite figure out why they'd only give 2 weeks cover. I don't doubt they had good reason but i can't think of one.

The cover note was only temporary because my dad was going to put the three cars onto a block insurance but then with all that happened never got around to it.
Thanks for all your help. I think we have written off the car cost but i was so worried about the implications for my dad.I really appreciate you all taking the time to answer my query.
Thank you0 -

This is what confused me when it was said that the car was covered on a temporary covernote but did not 'renew'.
Could be that it was added to an existing policy as a temporary additional vehicle.0
