Hi all,
My Vauxhall Astra 1.6 sxi lost power on the way to work today and the mechanical light came on. It still runs but has no power and when I change gear it sort of drops back and the engine sounds a bit more rattly. It feels really sluggish and has no power to accelerate.
Please can any one in the know or who has had the same problem and got it fixed advise?
Id rather have some idea what it is before taking it to vauxhall because their diagonstics often dont pick up all problems.

Could be anything - the engine has probably gone into its default mode to keep you moving when there is a fault - this often results in poor engine performance. Its probably best to get the fault codes read - you can buy a scanner off ebay for about £20 if you dont want to rely on a garage.0

Iv done a bit of research and found three common things it might be
1. ECU
2. air flow meter
3. gear selector switch/relay0 -
You need to have the codes read before anything else.0

My mums corsa did this, it was something to do with the gearbox, she got it fixed pretty cheaply. On the other hand my mates corsa did this too but it was a different problem, the crankshaft (whatever that is) broke and would have cost over £1000, luckily it was under warranty.
If u have a nationwide autocentre near by take it there for them to look. My local one doesnt charge much to run diagnostics, and they are normally cheaper than vauxhall garages for repairs.0 -
Thanks for the advise, unfortunately my car is 2002 so it isnt one of the models that the paper clip method can be used on.0
