Just had the bill...

I was pretty shocked by my gas and electric bill this month.
I live in a 2 bed rented flat with my boyfriend, and we are moving 200 miles away to wales in a couple of weeks.
As you can understand it's a stressful time- we are spending alot of money, but my dual fuel bill arriving has made it so much more worse.

I'm not really savvy about gas and electric charges, I just take it as it comes (When it looks an affordable bill).

Our gas for nov - feb estimated was: £72.72
Gas from feb to now (read meter) is: 67.08- I am ok with this, obviously as it wasn't as much as last time.

Our bill from Nov to Feb was estimated for electricity at: £58.11
Our bill from Feb to now is read for electricity at: £169.35

Obviously I know I cannot contest as it was actually read from our meter, and the one from nov to feb was possibly under estimated?

I would like to know if this price is pretty normal?

  • My guess is that as your gas is so cheap for the winter months, you've either got electric heating or an immersion heater to heat up your water - and that's why your electricity is a little bit more expensive... But, you'd need to give full readings of your gas and electricity (in kWh) to be able to confirm how much per day/month...

If you have an immersion heater for hot water, or electric heaters, then it's likely to be correct. It's not overly excessive, and as you say, the previous readings could have both been under-estimated.

Good luck with the move, and I'd suggest that you haven't really got much to worry about here... All I would say is voluntarily call up the electricity/gas suppliers at least quarterly to give them proper readings, so that you don't get under (or over) estimates... That'll ensure that you don't get any surprises...
Having fun trying to save money without going over the top and living on budget food all the time...
