HELP!!! Car tax runs out today, I can't find insurance certificate!

Very good point.
As I understand it, the authorities give one months' grace before automatically fining you. However, if a policeman (or traffic warden?) spots an out-of-date tax disc they can theoretically issue a fine immediately.
In my (clueless) opinion, they don't realistically bother to look at tax discs any more, unless you've really p1ssed them off.

Last time I did one at Post Office they scanned the barcode on the reminder and didn't check docs I think they have the same system as the website
Post Office can't check the Insurance only the MOT, as they do not have access to the Motor Insurance Database.
