In clearing it's the figures that are important as that's what the computer reads. If he's not fussed by losing the 2 quid it should be paid in as what the figures say. Chances are it will go through, if not the bank will return it to him to go back to the customer so he wouldn't lost out anyway.

My brother-in-law took a cheque from someone and the words and figures dont match, theres only about £2 difference, the words has the correct details whereas the figures are £2 less than what it should be, if they bank this will this be accepted/declined?? I remember reading somewhere at work saying that you should take the figures amount and not the words, does anyone else know the answer to this?? Its a business cheque so they didnt really want to drive all the way for the sake of £2 as it'll cost them more in petrol.

    TIA
How much are we talking about here? How much is the meal for?

You should be ok as long as you accept the lower amount of the words and figures.
If you want the full amount a new or amended cheque need to asked for.

I would pay it in and see what happens. If it is for a relatively small amount it will probably be processed for one of the two amounts if you get it past the cashier!

I would NOT pay it in, you will have a delay on it should the bank withold it and the funds while it carries out checks.
Do not bank it, its best to get a replacement, it really is not worth it!
