Tesco internet phone - any views?

Hello

I am thinking of getting rid of my BT phone as I pay £11 per month line rental and about £5 on calls.

I have VM BB, is the Tesco internet phone any good. As far as I can see I can sign up for free and then buy a £5 headset and make calls for 2p per min?

Anyone use this Tesco service?

Thanks

rubbish in what respect? call quality? dropped calls, what? No offence to terryw, but that's not an opinion I'd base any decision on, without knowing exactly why it was so crappy.

There are a pile of voip providers though, not just tesco. Have you looked into skype, voipcheap etc? You're bound to find one that suits you.

Sorry that my post was too brief. The main difficulty with the Tesco phone is the delay between sending the message and the recipient receiving it. There is no comparison with using a normal phone.

I did not use the word "crappy". Try to avoid foul language on this forum. No offence to you weegie, just my opinion.rolleyes.gif

First off, you're not staff, so take your pretend board guide hat off. If you don't like my language be mature and ignore it or put me on ignore. If "crappy" offends you so much I'd hate to see your reaction if you were to step away from your computer into the real world. :rotfl:Or are you just looking for something to moan about because I dared ask you to elaborate?

It was nothing personal, I can assure you. I would just rather make an informed decision on something, as I'm sure most people would.

As for the delay, there's no technical reason why there should be a noticeable delay with voip, assuming everything's working as it should. There may well have been problems with the service when you tried it, ot perhaps tesco (or whoever they're reselling) oversubscribe.

Since the headset will work with any voip provider, the OP wouldn't be risking anything by giving tesco a try. It may well be as bad as when you tried it but it's worth a bash, no? If it turns out to be bad, the headset will work with whatever provider they do end up going with.

Tesco and Skype are two of the dearest UK VoIP providers.

With Skype being proprietary so stuck with using their crappy toy town phones and can't chop and change provider as and when you like.

Even Sipgate offers a lower priced service and has been around years longer.

For best use you want to use it with an ATA (Analogue Telephone Adapter) a device where you plug a standard corded to DECT phone into the device.

I use both Sipgate and one of the Betamax VoIP providers and have excellent service, no one has realised I wasn't on a normal phone line, only knew when I told them.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

Thought I'd give the net phone ago and to be safe got an Argos Binatone phone (30 day moneyback :) )

So plugged it all in registered to Skype made 15 mins worth of calls Sunday and all excellent - very impressed.

Yesterday it wouldn't work. Phone keeps changing status from Online to PC disconnected every few seconds. Unable to call anyone.

Is this my Virgin BB connection or a dodgy phone?

My BB seems to be working fine for websites and is 4MB and isn't going slow.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks
