A Problem Trying to Claim on my Holiday Insurance...

The short story is that while on holiday in France visiting my parents I left my digital camera on top of the car and then we drove away. After several hours of searching, nothing was found. The camera cost £300, so I was a little annoyed to find out that Drakefield Insurance (gotravelinsurance) wouldn't pay out on the technicality that I didn't get a Police report. This is where the fun starts, they wouldn't give me a report due to me just losing it, had I had it stolen, then I could get a report, and no doubt I'd also get my money. Also, it seems that if I'd have reported it to a Hotel manager, then I could have had a valid claim... but as it was family, then I wouldn't. After many many emails, and one or two phone conversations I wrote them a letter. I never heard anything back. It's now about a year later and now I find out that the company should have responded within 15 days or so. Can anyone tell me if this is true. Also I'd like to pursue this claim further, but I'm not sure where I stand being this much later on. Can anyone offer me some advice?

Cheers,

M

I would have thought they may not pay out as you didn't demonstrate a reasonable standard of care, you left it on the roof and drove off, no doubt the camera ended up in many pieces spread around France. SOrry not trying to be negative, but I would have thought on a claim for theft you would have to show you had taken all sensible steps to stop it beign stolen.

    Hi,

I'm not trying to say it was stolen, just that I would have got a report from the Police, meaning that I could have made a claim. Also I could have made a claim if I hade been able to report it elsewhere like a hotel manager... Also if I did have a Police report I could make a claim. They even tried to tell me that the Police in France do give out reports, so I gave them the telephone number of the station in France and they found out I was correct about the lack of a number and reverted back to the 'fact' that they needed one. I'm more interested in the letter that I sent them (which they asked me to do) that they did not reply to... they didn't once come up with, not due care etc...
