It does seem odd, but maybe if it was a physical condition they were claiming for and this improved to the extent that they started a physical type job and the DWP found out they could say he was claiming falsely. This is probably not a good example but I remember Keith Miller in Eastenders had his Incapacity Benefit stopped when the DWP found out there was not much wrong with his back! Just to add I know he is not a real person!!0

I assume he must have done something two years earlier which indicated to them his condition had improved at that time? Or perhaps they just stop the claim back to the time of the last medical if they find out they should have been updated during the claim period?
It seems absolutely daft to me as he could possibly have received all sorts of help finding work (and financial help iun the first few weeks etc) if he'd gone through the proper channels.
I'm wondering if he claimed IB and JSA together, or whether he did some temporary work that they have found out about?
But anyway, he needs to speak to them (via the cab is best as already suggested) and arrange a manageable payment plan. They won't make him sell his share of the house, but they will expect him to pay what he can afford. If he goes to the cab, tell him to take details of all his ingoings and outgoings so they can help him work out a realistic figure.0 -

I suppose, for example, if you were on IB for a condition such as an injured knee and you can hardly walk. After nine months you have an operation that fixes it. It's OK now, so you are no longer entitled to IB. At this point you should inform them that you are ready to return to work and receive JSA instead until you have a job. If you remain on IB at this point you are claiming fraudulently.
I suppose if this is the scenario then they will backdate the overpayment to either when you had the operation, or the last time you had an IB medical.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
I don't think for a minute they will expect him to sell his home.
Don't know about the JSA offsetting.
His best bet really is to see a Benefits Advisor at the CAB who will be able to help him with all of this. This is my strong advice.(AKA HRH_MUngo)
