Taking buggies on flights

Hi there, wondering if anyone can give me their experience of flying with infants.

I am planning to fly from gatwick to manchester, then manchester to sligo in the summer with my baby. We have a quinny buzz travel system (I would just use the maxicosi car seat attachment to travel with). Can this be taken on flight as hand luggage? And does I need to inform the airline beforehand?

I'm a tad concerned as the quinny is a bit on the bulky side. |Does this matter at all?

Thanks!

If it won't fit in the overhead lockers then no you can't take it...I really don't think it will fit if its the kind I'm thinking about.

someone will be along in a moment with a better idea of things.

    good luck!

I have taken fold up buggies on flights several times, they take them from you just as you board and then you collect them with the rest of your luggage, although sometimes it comes out on the aisle with heavy/bulky items. If you're still worried why not gve the airline a call or check on their website to be safe. As i said though I've flown with various airlines and never had a problem, hth

I've flown with a buggy, but not a car seat or with a connecting flight so can't comment on that. The airline will let you take the buggy up to the plane, but then they usually put it in the hold. Depending on baggage handlers either the buggys come off first and are put aside for you at baggage reclaim or they are just put on the belt with the rest of the luggage. Occasionally I have been allowed to put buggy (maclaren) in overhead locker, I think it depends on size of plane.

The one thing I recommend if travelling with a baby however is to squeeze a sling or papoose in your hand luggage, then it doesn't matter when you get the buggy back. Hope you have a good flight!
  • Adding on from the previous poster about slings. Depending on the age of your baby, if it won't be comfortable for you to carry in a sling it is possible to take a back carrier on as an item of hand baggage, this squashes down for cabin storage.

I would strongly recommend just taking an umbrella type pushchair, pushchairs really do take a bashing, and umbrella varieties are designed to take this better than other travel systems.

I don't know how they did it, but a couple on my recent holiday did manage to take the car seat with them, I assume it goes in the hold.

    Happy holidays
