alternative to plastering ceiling

Basically all of my ceilings in my house upstairs are cracked, it was like this when i got the house, its due to stupid people putting stuff in the loft without thinking, i think
Anyway after looking at costs of getting a plasterer in i was wondering if there are any alternatives to the traditional approach.
I would also like to install down lighters in to each ceiling, i can do this myself though
Thanks

Depends how bad the cracks are - Polycell do a crack free ceiling paint which is thicker than normal paint (contains some filler I think) which helps to seal and cover cracks. I've used this and found it pretty good - its nicely sealed a nasty crack in the downstairs cloakroom ceiling which was getting on for 2mm wide in places.Adventure before Dementia!0

its an odd one, the plaster is blistering in odd places!
Do they still plaster ceilings in new builds?0
