Hello Droopsnout.
Is it actually true that if you receive a pension from a state body (like a Teachers pension) it HAS to be taxed in the UK.
Wow.... does this mean when I get my state pension later this year it will have tax deducted before it gets to me!!!!
That is a big shock to me. I think that is crazy. I am lost for words!!!!There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.0 -
This is a link to the website of the chap who writes articles on financial matters for The Connexion newspaper in France. There's some very interesting stuff here ... enough for me to have a go at my French tax return, I think.

Hi all I received the following email about car insurance. I do not live abroad but spend 6 months there at a time. Getting car insurance for this time abroad can be both difficult and expensive. As I am over 50 Saga supplies my car insurance and gives me 365 days European cover. I made enquiries to ecarinsurance last year and they sent me this email

Yes, on first examination, the link is to a presentation of the same info as was presented in The Connexion's four-page tax guide. I found it extremely useful, if not exhaustive. It still took me the best part of a half-day to complete (in my case) two forms.
But certainly the guide should help you greatly, and I'm pleased you feel able to begin to attack the paperwork! But don't forget that the forms for 2008's declaration of income won't be issued until spring, for a return by the end of May 2009. Doing a run-through of your 2007 declaration on that year's forms may be a very useful precursor, though!
Thank you for posting the link to Michael Annett's site. How good it is to get financial advice without paying!! I could do with similar assistance about wills!Much of the social history of the Western world over the past three decades has involved replacing what worked with what sounded good. - Thomas Sowell, "Is Reality Optional?", 19930 -

I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who will find this useful. I suppose, though, that it doesn't cover foreign-registered vehicles??
I must say that when it comes to insurance of all kinds, I go to a local independent broker, and she chooses my policies (which I have checked online for competitiveness - and she knows it - and which seem comprehensive), as in the event of any claim, I can go to see her and ask her to deal with all the paperwork.
That's not what is required by other people, of course, especially if they're not actually resident in France (or wherever).
It seems very unusual to be offered 365 days' cover for motoring. That is a good find!Much of the social history of the Western world over the past three decades has involved replacing what worked with what sounded good. - Thomas Sowell, "Is Reality Optional?", 19930 -

State retirement pension isn't taxed at source, however the amount is counted againt your tax free allowance which means any other pensions and income may be subject to tax dependent on the amount. HTH.....................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

I think you will find it is the civil service and other government pensions, but not the State pension which are taxed at source.
I use Saga so will try to use this in October when I have to renew again.

Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?0 -
Thanks Errata that information on the State Pension makes me feel a bit better.
I feel very sorry for those people resident outside the UK and still get their Government Pension paid nett. What a silly and old fashioned attitude to the world!
So does that mean that those of you resident outside the UK have to claim the Tax back at the end of the year, then declare your income in your new Home Country and pay the tax there? There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.0 -

Depends what you mean by a"state pension". If you mean your old age pension, then it's taxable in France, if you mean an occupational pension from the state as in Civil Service, teachers etc, then it's taxed in the UK. If you have both then each will be taxed in different countries , which can be quite advantageous.0
