For those who haven't time to follow the link in the post above (by hobo) here is a relevant extract:
Yet the analysis by KPMG hides more than it reveals. Though it says the past five years have been good for building societies, this does not reflect the sector's overall strength, just that of a building societies elite, led by Nationwide, Britain's biggest society.
Nationwide accounts for 45% of the sector's assets and is the only building society with the might to take on the big financial services brands.
Despite KPMG's healthy prognosis, the sector is ripe for consolidation. There are far too many building societies out there that no longer provide value for money for their customers. Many continue to exist only because of customer inertia and the refusal of executives to let go of their empires.
A series of mergers would be in consumers' best interests. The sooner this happens, the better.

IMHO, there will be earlier action affecting some of the remaining mutual life offices (excluding SLAC here
) than amongst the BS's.
Of course, it may not be so easy (economical) to bag these.
