  • loved halloween when i was little growing up in scotland. would dress up and my mum and auntie or sometimes an older friend would take me out. would do the ducking for apples at home. but when out would have to say " the sky is blue the grass is green, what have you got for my halloween" would then have to sing a song or tell a joke to get some goodies. mostly got fruit (apples, oranges, monkey nuts) sometimes sweets and crisps and if lucky some money for your piggybank.

don't think any harm is done, especially if an adult or responsible person is with them, think kids mostly like the dressing up. if you don't like it go out, put a sign up or don't answer the door.

  • Halloween coincides with my daughters birthday so her parties always finished with the guests getting dressed up and going around our avenue en masse, usually around 10 of them. They were always polite and nice (or they said they were ;) ) and the neighbours knew that after our gang had been then that was it for the night, no more visits.
We used to tip out the treats onto the dining table and divide them out so they got a party bag and the halloween stash too. We have some great photos  to look back on.
  • we dont do trick or treating either, i dont like the idea of taking my little un to strangers houses. So me and my sister do a huge party for all the kids instead, last year we had 18 kids there. (just family and friends) and we play games and have a fancy dress competiton and things like that. We (the adults) also get dressed up and join in all the fun. we have a fantastic time.

We also have a huge couldren full of sweets and toys (party bag toys) for the kids that come knocking on the door. The thing that went the best this year was glow sticks....tey flew out the door!

I love Halloween. Last year I had loads of callers though, with some fantastic costumes. My little boy is really looking forward to all the monsters calling round agin. (He was a bit too little last year and was getting a bit scared towards his bedtime.)

Last year I was totally unprepared for the number of callers and ended up giving them money. Not very MSE! This year, I'm going to be better prepared.

My son is going to dress up in a wizard outfit and hand out sweets/lollies etc from one of those bargain tubs for sale at Aldi. Should work out much cheaper. I've also been looking at the other Halloween threads on here for inspiration as well.

I used to go out trick or treating when I was a teenager. There was never any malice involved - we were completely stumped by the odd person that said 'trick' as we could never think of anything to do! We also used turnips as lanterns. I didn't even set eyes on a real pumpkin until I was 21!

  • I get quite nervous at the thought of Halloween callers, because there are so many older teens expecting money and I think gangs just use it as an excuse to throw things at peoples' houses. It really upsets me, because I think that sometimes people who buy nice treats in good faith feel intimidated by older callers who don't make the effort to dress up, and use the threat of a "trick" rather than expecting a reward for having made an effort. It's sad, but I feel the police should be out in force, too!

Fortunately, I live at the back of a property, off an alley, and no one calls. This year we're going to a scary double-bill of 1940s films at our Arts Centre. I'm really looking forward to it. I doubt they'll be THAT scary, but hopefully atmospheric and classic, anyway! The last few years I've made pumpkin soup, and (arty) boyfriend has carved the pumpkin. Last year we were surprised that all the ones we saw had smiling faces, and ours was menacing! We wondered what it said about our psyches! Last year we watched The Blair Witch Project and the year before, The Wicker Man. (it's only me and my boyfriend).

I don't know about other forces, but Sussex Police usually issue a poster every year for those who don't want trick or treaters. Worth asking in your local police station if you want something official in your window

I always think that the best answer to the "trick or treat?" question is to hesitate, scratch your head for a moment, and then say "oh, trick I think". And then throw a bucket of water at them.

You can often use the confusion that follows to take their sweets.
