Ethernet and usb wireless

We have 2 computers, 1 running win NT, 1 win 98 connected by an ethernet cable. Can I connect the win 98 machine to the internet via a usb wi-fi connecter without upsetting the ethernet connection.

Many thanks in advance

Do you have a WI-FI Router and how do both computers connect to the net at the moment? If you are going wireless I'm confused as to why you would still need the ethernet connection. Why not just set up a wireless network and have both comps running on that. Even if one machine is plugged into the router by ethernet the wireless machine can stillconnect to it.

We don't, the win Nt computer operates a special camera which is networked via ethernet to a second office computer running Win 98. The software is proptietory and we do not wish to risk upsetting it - consultant reset last time £1000+.

However we are now getting a broadband connection which we would like to use on the win 98 computer via a wi-fi connection to a BT office router.

Hope this explains our problem - we do not need access to the internet on the camera computer.

I'd image both hard drives before changing anything if the techs charge a grand for a payout. ;)

Edit: a grand for a payout? For a callout I meant, of course. Athough it's quite a payout... :)

Why is there a requirement for the win98 machine?
Personally i would look for a cheap win2k computer connect that to the internet and use a kvm(keyboard, video, mouse switch) to utilise the new pc from the win98 console.
That would maintain the system integrity and free you from any risk of hacking, virus etc
