I've looked into this and am still considering it. the start up cost is about £95 for your basic demo kit, and you have to agree to do 6 qualifying parties (£125 sales each) within a year of starting.
One thing that has really been putting me off is my concern about getting parties. My friend who is trying to get me into this insists that she's really busy and it's going well but 3 weeks ago she said I could come to her next party to see what it's all about and she's not had one yet, though I know she's aiming for 3 a week!
I had a look at the netmums discussion on pampered chef when my friend first aasked me and was worried by the focus that seems to be on recruiting new consultants, and a comment that someone posted about 'appearing busy, that you have as much work as you want or more'. But if curent consultants do that then how can the new ones know whether or not they want to sign up?

That said then I'm still tempted because £95 for all the cool stuff in the starter pack is a good deal, and you only have to do 6 qualifying parties (top it up with orders from friends at work or toddler group or whatever if you don't get enough at a party?)

    Hi

if it helps then I do feel that July and August have been generally quiet and that is the way it seems to be on a yearly basis, people on hols, saving up for hols, paying off hols CC bill! It is the nature of the beast.

the key seems to be who you know and how much you put into it. I am limited as I have children still at home, I don't want to work loads in the evenings as I like my sleep but that is when I have to work if I want to build up the business for when boys go to school.

I earn on average £60 a time varying from £130 (2 parties) a month to £540 a month (that is based on 8 parties) where as a colleague has been earning loads more with more parties than she knows what to do with and has recruited 2 people having started at same time as me but she has given up her day job so needs to make it work and count to replace her income.

The way to get better money from it is to recruit but is completely up to you whether and when you recruit. I am not overly interested in this at present but in the future I will look at that angle however if someone plopped themselves infront of me asking to sign up then I would hand them the paper no probs but not interested in talking people into it as not me!!!!

i just have to remember that rome was not built in a day and that my parents (who are self employed) come home quite often with no sales at all and they have a showroom to pay for and a mortgage but some days they have really good sales so it kind of rolls on up and down. I would definitely recommend it although the cluster meetings sometimes seem a bit like intro to AA !

    Happy to answer any questions

Just wanted to add I'm just starting (first party next week and can't wait). My director is really helpful and supportive. Lots of suggestions, but not pushing you towards anything. The best thing about PC is you get out of it what you put in.

If you have your own party you can use some of your host points towards your kit and get it for £47 instead of £97 +you get all the usual host benefits. And you get any bookings generated at your party.

I would definitely suggest going to a cluster meeting, and go and talk to more experienced consultants.

    Whereabouts are you in?

  • I too do pampered chef and there are no targets (apart from the ones you set yourself) they do run incentives to get you to do more but if you don't want to you don't have to.

Some one in my cluster does 1 show every other month and someone else does 3 shows per week, it is down to you and what you want to do there is no pressure

You conveniently forget to mention the £110 starter fee of this American Multi Level Marketing outfit.

To succeed in this sort of business you have to recruit more people which is not easy.

I only paid £70 for mine as I got a host credit, and i have made that back in my first 2 shows.

if you just want the extra money you don't have to recruit but if you do want to advance then yes you do.

  • How does tax work? I'm a high tax rate payer and am looking to do this as a bit of extra pocket money. £60 a party is not bad but if the tax man is going to take 40% of that then that is a different story. I'm guessing that is how it will work but I wanted to check in case I was missing something? I'm not great with tax as I've never been self employed. I know I can claim costs but that won't make a huge difference. Any thoughts?

No special lower rate tax concession applies. If your already liable for higher rate tax your pay that on your addl earnings less any allowable expenditure.

Apart from that there is no guarantee you will get £60 a party. The post that mentions that figure is nearly 3 years old.
