I was going to suggest lots of washing up - it always seems to soften mine.

I don't have hard nails but I use Olive Oil on mine. I keep a small bottle by my desk at work and when I think about it I rub a little in.

I always moisturise mine after I get out of the shower, or they can get quite brittle and dry.
