hi there.
just had mortage adviser round to remortage our house and check our insureance and found out that i have been paying twice for my contents insureance.
we took the advisors policy out when he did the mortage and some how northen rock started one as well for the contents.
we phoned them up when we found out before the mortage started and had to pay a cancelation fee to stop it which we did and we thought that it was sorted.
2 years later its time to remortage as northen rock has put payments up for the mortage by a lot.
we also asked him see if he could get the insureance any cheeper and found out that northern rock was still taking out almost £40 a month for the canceled policy.
£40 a month for over 2 years is a lot which is much better in my pocket than in theres and it should have never been taken in the first place.
tried to ring them tonight about it but they was closed so i am ringing tomorrow from work to get my money back.
i need to know how easy will it be to claim back and would i be able to get any intrest back on it as well.
any help would be really helpful.
cheers dave

Someone faced with the same problem (which I haven't been) would be best placed to answer, hope they appear and can give you an answer.
But with some experience of insurance in general - I think you will be ok in getting the past premiums back - but - how easily may depend on what paperwork you can put together - never easy I know.
I assume there won't be a dispute from Northern Rock that you have paid the premiums after cancellation - so the key point is can you supply evidence:
a) Of the cancellation penalty you paid - and any paperwork.
b) Of payments to the other Insurer.
It may sound irrelevant - but when on a claim it is found that 2 Insurers are covering the same risk (by default or otherwise) they will each contribute to the loss in proportion to the levels of cover each held - that to me is the one argument you may face - namely that Northern Rock will say they would have met a claim. That is why the evidence is important.
Sorry this is so general, but hope it helps.
Interest? - all you can do is ask/argue for it - good luck.If many little people, in many little places, do many little things,

I'm sorry if this question sounds rude, its not meant to be, but how on earth do you keep paying for something you have cancelled and not notice? Didn't you check a statement or two after the cancellation to make sure it had been cancelled?
Don't mean to be rude, I'm just baffled

Hi - hope I'm using this forum correctly and in the right one. My Insurance company Lloyds TSB have just written to me to say that I have been paying duplicate contents insurance with Fortis since July 2001 and they would be sending me out a refund in 2 weeks - that was over 4 weeks ago and when I called them yesterday they said it was currently with Fortis and they will only refund on the last 3 years - has anyone experienced this before and how do i go about claiming the full amount from 2001?0
