help with car 350 watt speakers & 40wx4 cd player

hi

i've a Wharfedale WCA73xxx, now being used in my car with the following specs:
[CD-Player: with CD-Player & MP3 Playback
Size in DIN: 1 DIN
Wattage: 40 Watt
Number of Output Channels: 4].

I now listen to it on my speakers (50 watts each) that originally came fitted on the car.

Recently, i was gifted a pair of ministry of sound 6 x 9" rear speakers at 350 watt each. could someone tell me, if it is okay to replace my original car speakers with the 'mos' speakers? would it harm the car stereo, as was told to me by a car stereo installer?

thanks a lot in advance

Thats fine - as long as the max w capacity is greater than the w produced by the head unit. 350w will be the max - when the speaker will be cream crackered - there should be a safe lower reading for acceptable use - around 200w I would imagine.

There are three types of people in the world, those who can add up and those who can't.
  • So long as the impedance (in ohms) of the speakers is within the tolerances specified on the amplifier/head unit, they will be fine. For most purposes this is around 4 ohms at 1KHz.

Sensitivity is also important, this is usually quoted in dB at 1 metre. Low sensitivity speakers will require better amplification, cheap amplifiers (no offence but the amp in your head unit will be cheap, they all are) can often clip at high volumes and damage speaker cones.

buy an external amplifier, this will give the best sound from the stereo with those speakers,it will also save the head unit,i once had a set of speakers similar to those wired up to the head unit,i had to change the head unit after 4 months of use as it kept over heating.
i now have a kenwood amp powering the 6x9's in the parcel shelf and the head unit powers the standard speakers. the sound is greatly improved.
