Putting a door in the side of the garage

Hi all,

Can anyone help with a very rough idea as to how much a builder would charge to put a door in the side of a garage. We are looking to buy a house that only has access to the garage via the up and over door by the front door of the house, and it would be more useful if we could access it via the back door for storage, chest freezer etc.

We're in Essex if it helps, but am just after a rough idea, so any help greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

  • Well i live oop north and don't do this sort of thing very often, usually when one of my extended family beg me but i'll try and help.

The cheapest i can get a upvc door for is about £250.00 and a bit less for a decent timber door and frame but this is negated by taking longer for the timber door to fit.Would also need a lintol, say £20.00 and a days labour. It's not a difficult job.Run a brickcutter down each side, knock out the brickwork, fit lintol and make good, fit door and seal up.The worst part is getting rid of the rubble. If i didn't have to remove rubbish then i would do this for about £500.00 ish but then i'm not greedy.

Essex prices are probably a lot more i would guess.

    Thanks Woody!
Just wanted a rough idea. So, if you reckon £500 up in the cold north (;-)) then it's probably more like £1000 down here?
Hmmm, we'll have to think about that!
  • Looking at some of the prices i see on here then yes probably.

I'd love to do the same but my garage is a concrete sectional garage (comptons I think), any idea if it can be done, anyone?

    Thanks in advance.

  • More than likely. You could take out one of the sections and make a frame and door to suit.

hi woodbutcher, we have a 10year old house, dining room window is 1200mm wide same depth. wanted to replace this with french doors.

where would you get the doors from?
would you make them lower than normal doors and fit a low threshold and to do this would you just put the dpc under the door. is that normal practice.

what part of up north are you from.

    cheers
  • Are you wanting uPVC doors or timber?Don't really understand the bit about taking them lower than normal doors, could you elaborate.

I live in North East Lincs btw.
