Decking Quote

Options
Hi All,

Am hoping one of you is ale to let me know what you think of the following quote.

We are having some decking laid to the rear of our house, we were originally quoted by a local firm who work in conjunction with the garden centre and their quote came in at £4,600.00!!

The husband of a friend of mine is a structural engineer and is building the extension for their house so he offered to quote us on the work instead. To me his quote is great but my husband says I am being influenced by the outrageous quote from the builder. The friends quote is below;

1) to supply and install 35m2 of 145mm x 30mm treated softwood decking complete with supporting joists and battons.

2) supply and install 2No. 2m lengths of 1.1m high hand railing to the garden end of the decking.

3) supply and install 1No. 2m wide x 300mm deep step to the garden end of the decking.

4) modify existing side access gate to open over proposed decking.

5) provide and opening section in the decking to allow access to the existing drainage inspection cover.

Total Cost £2440.00 inclusive of materials and resonable expenses.

So.........who's right......me or the husband????

Thanks,
Al.

we have decking 4m x 4m with 6 balustrades and 70' of rope, with all joists and battens.........cost £575.

we fitted it in a weekend.

your cost seem steep to me.

hummm we're looking at doing a 9mx3m section of decking with balustrades, have it pretty much all priced up now at about £700

we're going to fit it ourselves over a weekend.

I'd say your quote is a bit high too, do you know how much of it is parts & how much labour?
  • Without spending too much time on it I`d guestimate total cost of maerials here in region of £750 . Then I`d say job should take no more than 3 days so . . . . . . £600 per day labour = sems a little steep

I`m basing cost of decking on £1.50 per lin mt = £10 per m2 = £350 then same again to allow for joists , handrails , etc but only as a guestimate - please don`t crucify your hubbys mate if I`m out !

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies. The costs are £1100 and the rest is labour for 2 guys for 3 days work. The site is on a slope with existing steps that need removing. Is also an really awkward shape, about as far from square as you can get, 17 corners!!!

lol - sounds fun! No comparrison with ours then, it's just going to be a rectangle - hopefully - although it'll probably end up with as many corners as yours by the time we've worked out what the hell we're doing!
