Missing check

Hello forum members, I have been a reader for a year now but first time posting. I thought this was the best place to get competent banking advice :-)

A few weeks ago I deposited 6 checks to my bank account.

The total sum was in my account a few days later but then there was an "adjustment".

When I first called I was told that the deposited sum was incorrectly calculated and thus corrected by the bank staff.

Later I was told that only 5 of the 6 checks made it to the banks check clearing department.

I was told that I should contact the company that issued the check and ask for a new one.

I find this a very poor service as I have a stamped receipt showing 6 checks and the total sum. At the same time I am not sure which company provided the "missing" check and not keen on calling around asking for reissuing a check.

What are my legal rights?

Are you talking "checks" or cheques ?

Do you have the remittance advice slips for any of the cheques that were issued to you?

Unfortunately, banks can't just magic things up that go missing so you'll have to do some investigative work to find out which one has gone astray and ask the company who issued it to cancel it and issue a replacement. I'd assume they'd be much more content if their money wasn't lost somewhere in the ether as well.

I mean cheque as in "a method of payment from a bank to another person's bank."

Out of interest, what other meaning can a check have in the context above (as in depositing a check into a bank account)?

    thanks!

I have just the "standard" dated and stamped slip that says 6 cheques and the total sum.

Had I used an ATM to deposit the cheques I would have had copies of all of them but I wanted to make sure they were safely deposited so queued up for a bank staff thus not getting any copies of the deposited cheques.

thank you for your input be_alright!

Nothing, but it is better to use the correct spelling, or is that the American version?

You do not deposit checks into a bank account!
