Forgive me for being young and financially naive, but surely they can't go that much lower, and the government wouldn't let it collapse, I presume.
So aren't we looking at a reasonable opportunity for long term investment? I remember Nothern Rock shares doubling (If I recall correctly) when the chancellors bail out plan was announced.
Just curious.0 -
And let me remind you that US the tax payer have already bailed the banking industry out to the tune of £80 billion, and shareholders knew the risk when they invested, the same answer giving by the Banks when a person loses their house..you knew the risks
As for Companies going under you can aim your remark to the banking industry, the same industry that has taken many small companies out of business with their charges;)
The bank was nationalised, i.e. compulsorarily taken off the shareholders whose shares are now worth nothing. No money was given to them. Around half the staff are likely to be made redundant.
Takes someone who's more than a little bitter and twisted to delight in that or want to see more of the same.0 -

Northern Rock shareholders want £1.7bn compensation
Shareholders in Northern Rock have vowed to take legal action if they are not properly compensated for their shares.
They believe they should receive at least £4 a share, more than four times Friday's final share price of 90p.
Yep tax payer will foot the bill

I know hows about this Government giving the many who have lost their homes the difference between the auction price and the current value..0 -
I hope all this talk is not going to start another stupid run on a bank. As I read the situation, B&B have a future earnings potential problem, not a liquidity problem. In other words, shareholders have a bleak outlook whereas savers with deposits at B&B are not at risk.
Does anyone read the situation differently?

At last someone with sense regarding Shareholders,or to put it another way
Do remember though that shares are risk investments and their value can go down as well as up, as can the income. If, therefore, you are an investor, as opposed to a short term speculator, you must regard investment in shares as a medium to long term exercise and spread your investments between a number of companies in order to minimise the risks. This spread of investments is known as a portfolio. It is very important to judge the level of risk you are prepared to take and your adviser will assist you on this.;)0 -
B&B shares down another 2.5% to 88 pennies today alone.
This one is going down the toilet even quicker than Northern Rock did!!Krusty & Phil Madoff, 1990 - 2007:

Hell they want to be careful with shares at that price

Soon enough they'll be giving Bradford and Bingley share certificates away in Cornflakes packets.0

I wish people would not see this as such a joke. Have a little more feeling for some of us. I have been with B&B for 40+ years, and have what little savings we have for retirement with them. Myself and two sons hold the free shares and will never be in a position to buy shares on the stock market. Losing these would not be a problem as we never paid for them but losing our savings is difficult. Life in retirement is going to be difficult enough without some of you gloating as we lose our future.I'm stressed enough over this - please don't add to it.:eek:0
