You can call mobile phones from a landline for 3 pence per minute provided you get free calls to landlines.
Just register at https://www.voipgain.com
Download and install the software http://www.voipgain.com/en/download.html
Click on tools, options, general, Edit my voipgain profile.
Then enter your phone number starting with +44 droping the 0. Then click verify now.:)
Add credit to your account you can do this by loging in on the website top right.
Now you're ready to make calls just dial 02081809941 from your landline followed by your mobile starting with +44 and dropping the 0.
and ending the number with a hash.
Voila calls from landlines to mobiles for 3p per minute (I think there maybe a 5p connection charge) far the cheapest way I think you'll agree.Stephen0 -

I smell SPAMTime has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. I have just tried to call a mobilr from a Virgin land line using the 0844 123456 number but with no success.

No such number is shown on the UK Callchecker if calling a UK mobile from a Virgin landline.I have just tried to call a mobilr from a Virgin land line using the 0844 123456 number but with no success.

In any case, all 0844 numbers are eleven digits long and the fact that the (almost unbelievable) 0844123456 number you quote is only ten digits is probably the reason if it exists.

The new iPhone/Android app from Vonage Mobile (https://www.vonagemobile.com) potentially offers a new convenient and cheap way to call from a smart phone to a UK mobile (if this is not covered by a free call allowance). Instead of opening the normal phone app you just open the Vonage app instead and make your call just as you would normally do. Calls are free to any smart phone which has the same app, but for calls to any other UK mobile you pay 12 US cents per minute, which is about 7.5 pence at current rates.
That's cheaper than Skype, which is 17 p per minute, and cheaper than 18185 during the week, which is 10 p per minute (plus the price of calling a normal geographic number, which could be another 10 p or even 25 p for pay-as-you-go mobiles). 18185 is only 6 pence per minute at weekends, so this would be slightly cheaper than Vonage as long as the call to a geographic number is included within your monthly allowance of free calls.
Of course, any data costs would be on top of the Vonage charge, so using this app would probably only make sense if you are using free Wi-Fi or, if you are using 3G, the data is within your free allowance.
Even if you don't have a monthly data allowance, and you have no free Wi-Fi, it might make sense to use Vonage. For instance, on 02 pay-as-you-go you pay a maximum of £1 for data for one day (subject to fair usage policy). So, a 6 min call to a UK mobile over 3G would cost 6x7.5 + 100 = 145p, whereas making the same call at O2 rates would be 6x25 = 150p.
You have to buy credit in advance, but you can do this through iTunes.
Vonage claim that call quality is better than normal mobile calls.koru0 -

Megavoip only charge 2.5p per min to mobiles and they have an app.Stephen0 -

Looks similar to Vonage, but cheaper! Is the service reliable? Vonage claims to provide very high quality calls, although the feedback on the iTunes Store so far is not very good. [Update: I did a 40 minute call to a US landline yesterday and the audio was very clear with no drop outs. Cost: nothing]Stephen7372 wrote: »http://www.megavoip.com/rates/#letter-U

A possible advantage of Vonage is that you can top up your credit through the iTunes store, which some people might feel more comfortable about, although Megavoip seems to be one of the many services offered by Finarea, who also offer 18185, which has been popular with MSE for several years. As long as you don't sign up for a direct debit to your credit card, it is probably fairly reliable.koru0 -
The app for this one seems to just automatically dial a geographic phone number, rather than using transmitting over 3G data or Wi-Fi. This would not be good if you are on a pay as you go tariff, which can be as high as 35 p per minute to geographic numbers. The MegaVOIP MobileVoip app seems better, on a quick look.Stephen7372 wrote: »These do too https://www.easycallback.com/koru0
