Apple Mac / Tiscali Broadband?!

Hiya,

Anyone know if I can connect on an Apple Mac using Tiscali 2mg Broadband?

Tiscali BB has been fine since I signed up a few months ago, and altho' they've had a lot of bad press, I've luckily encountered no problems!

My PC is on its last legs, and so Im gonna get myself a Mac, although my worry is that Tiscali doesnt support Mac..

Their site claims they do..yet elsewhere on their site , they dont..

Many contradictory stories on the web have also confused me no end!

If anyone is using Tiscali BB and a Mac, and its all working fine, please let me know, so I can go ahead with my purchase safe in the knowledge that Ill be able to get online!

Many Thanks,

Jack

    Hi,

No exact answer I'm afraid. You're right the Tiscali site is all over the place claiming that it doesn't work then supplying links for Mac modem software.

The problem is that the modems used on Tiscali are USB, therefore requiring software drivers. Some do connect on Tiscali on a Mac, but others have problems. The issue lies with the quality of the drivers and not the Mac. So its pretty much hit and miss.

Personally if you are coming over to the light side (i.e., Mac!), then I would go with a service that use's an ethernet modem, if you have the option.

This will allow you to have a wireless option, which really is a necessity if you're getting a laptop as well.

Let me know if I can help further.
  • If you get a Mac then get an ethernet router/modem and then connecting to broadband is just the same as for a windows machine. DO NOT under any circumstances use a USB modem. They don't like Macs and Macs don't like them. The ISP you choose doesn't matter. The only support you will need is if the line goes faulty. Head over to adslguide.org and go to the mac forum if you need further help.

  • you can connect a MAC to Tiscali broadband using the right kit without a problem. When Tiscali say they don't 'support it' they mean none of their techy staff know about MACs so can't help when you get stuck
  • Thanks Guys!

    SchemingGypsy...

Cheers for the info.. does this mean then that I dont have to spend a lot more just yet on a wireless router / modem , and can instead safely use my Sagem USB ADSL modem??

Or would it damage the MAC?

As you can see, Im a novice so I want to make sure I do this right!

    Cheers,

    Jack
  • i know jackaroo about Macs mate, i just remember seeing something on the Tiscali forums a while back asking the same question.
  • Cheers mate,

I shall have a google about!
  • Please listen
USB modems and Macs DO NOT go together. The drivers drag down the mac.
Go and have a look on adslguide.org in the mac forum if don't believe me, but if you use your USB modem don't say you have not been warned !!!!!!!!!

I was a an Apple engineer for 12yrs, so you could say I have a little knowledge..............
  • Hiya patflanel,

    Sorry, point taken!

I need to do this the correct way, so I shall have a wonder over to the ADSL guide forum!

    Many Thanks,

    Jack
