Going for lights which are easy to clean has always been my top priorty, and flourecsents are the best. If you dont like the idea of them try fitting a diffuser they make flourecents look a lot better. Remember too that you can get different coloured white tubes for them such as daylight and warm white tubes
As for under cupboard lights have a look round any DIY store there all pretty much the same and price wise. Dont get them from the kitchen fitter they ll charge you a lot more
    Good luck

If you don't want a tube I was thinking of something like this :
    http://www.screwfix.com/prods/62288/Lighting/Internal-Lighting/Decorative-Wall-Ceiling/Flush-Fitting-White-2D-28W
Might need one at each end of the kitchen for good brightness.
Maybe not the best example, but there are several similar types which take http://www.screwfix.com/prods/17883/Lighting/Energy-Saving-Lamps/2D-Square-CFL/Low-Energy-Lamp-4-Pin-2D-28W
    this type of bulb.

I would get something similar to : http://www.screwfix.com/prods/79922/Lighting/Internal-Lighting/Utility-Lighting/T4-Linkable-Striplight-10W
for the under cupboard lighting, they fit with clips secured with a couple of screws, no need to cut holes like with halogen spots.
This type has a clear plastic diffuser cover over the tube, easier to clean , and a bit more splashproof - it is a good idea as grease and tiny flies seem to get stuck on the open tube type.

I guess I'm just too fussy and picky. I like the under unit lights that TimBuckTeeth mentions, but the circular flourecsent I'm not sure! I thinking something a bit more modern... Or maybe go for a standard pole length flourecsent but some kind of modern styling defuser... if there is such a thing!!

I had these put in under my units - they look really good. I had them wired into the main light switch on the wall so they are very easy to turn on. Under unit lights are essential if your ceiling lights are behind you when stood at the worktop - your own shadow gets in the way.

I have three strips of 4 spot lights in our kitchen and it is only 2.8 x 4.6 m. However, the ceiling is flat in one part and sloping in another, with a great big beam running across the middle. I couldn't decide on lighting so I just put some cheap ones from Ikea up - about £7.50 each including the four bulbs! They were supposed to be a stop gap until I made a proper decision but they actually look pretty good and I may keep them.
  • Hi, a nice solution for your lighting would be to use what is known as a snake light - 2.5 to 5 mtrs in length fittings clip on to bottom or sides - fittings range from 80mm in size upwards - various types available try having a look in your local ikea - but don't buy from there, then find your nearest electrical wholesalers and order one from them - it will last you a lot longer than from ikea. under the cupboards would be nice not with strip lights but either led or lv fittings have a look on the net for jcc lighting and download there catalogue. believe it or not ikea has some fantastic ideas of lighting types- unfortunatley there not designed the best way or have very reliable control gear in them. If you get stuck please pm me with any questions you may have.

The snake lights are very similar to the ones I'm looking at:

not too expensive and these have 6 lights on them. Along with under unit lights I should work out okay
