npower vs Southern Electric problem

Hi guys hope someone can help!

Problem: Moved house 17/11/07 brought my existing supplier with me. They took over 24/12/07 so npower were the providers of my gas till the 23rd. Took meter reading of gas on 23rd - rang S.E and gave the first and then final reading prior to their take over. Now have just recieved gas bill from npower for £500+ - contacted them, they need the meter reading from the 23/12/07 - but I don't have it anymore! Contacted S.E for it - they have for some inane reason used the reading from the date I moved in for their initial reading and have no record of the reading I took on the 23rd

What do I do? How do I work out what I owe npower as I have no record of the reading taken on the 23rd and I will need to pay npower for the gas used between 17/11 - 23/12/2007?

I have no idea how to sort this other than working out based on all the readings I have a daily rate between the 2 suppliers and giving them a reading based on this - though i'm sure that if I did this I could get into trouble so am really stuck to what I should do.

Any advice would be most helpful :o

You have suddenly remembered that you wrote down the reading you took on 23rd Dec and have just found it;)

All that can possibly happen now is they will have to estimate a reading, so you [STRIKE]estimating it for them [/STRIKE]finding that reading! solves the problem.
You are paying in full for all your gas, so have done nothing dishonest.

If nPOwer are charging you from read X (17/11/07) to Read Y (est 23/12/07), and SE are charging you from read X (24/12/07) you are being charged for the same gas twice. Both suppliers should use the same read so this situation shouldn't arrive - at least then your first SE bill would ne lower.
SE should have recorded the call. If they don't accept the read ing you 'find' ask them to find the phone call so they can verify it against your initial call.
This is probably too much hassle so they'll just accept your 'found' read, pass it on to nPower who'll adjust their bill too.
