I would suggest an independent check by AA/RAC is better than HPI, they may well have spotted that the car was a ringer

I said 13K was a lot of money for an 05 car ... and if I were spending that much I would go to a dealer.

You posted an autotrader advert for an 05 Audi 1.9 TDI Sport (hardly what I would call bog standard) for £13,000 at a dealer. There are currently 1,415 A3 TDIs (up to 3 years old) advertised on Autotrader and as you no doubt noticed all but a few 05 models are under £13k. I found an 2006 Audi A3 2.0 TDI 170BHP S Line 5dr Sportback for £4,500 private sale.
