Halifax Standing Order help!!!

Hi my first post here. I don't know who else to ask/believe. I moved into my new flat about three months ago and set up a standing order with Halifax on the 23rd so that my landlady would receive the rent on the 27th. I took a call from her today saying that the money had not gone into her account. A swift call to my bank explained that this was due to it being a bank holiday. Fair enough. However, she is fuming because her bank have charged her £30 as obviously she must have funds going out on the same day.

She thinks that I should try and claim her money back from my bank (which I did
try but they were saying it was her fault that she is in the red), and that this has never
happened with any of her other tenants.

Does this happen with all banks or do they take the bank holiday into consideration?
Can she claim her money back and how can I ensure that this doesn't happen in the
future? Would it be easier for me to just transfer the money over to her account
every month?

Sorry for all the questions but she's made me feel really bad and thank you in advance for all your answers!

    The answer is, YES!
The rule is, all banks delay payment processing over the bank holidays, you should always expect a delay in the transfer:rolleyes:

OP your landlady obviously has problems if she doesn't arrange her finances so that she has a buffer in case you don't pay the rent at all or you decided to move out.

I hope your deposit is protected.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)
  • Thanks for your reply. No need for the sarcasm lol! :pI knew that but she says her bank would have taken the hols into consideration???. Also if the 27th lands on the weekend it doesn't seem to affect the payments. If she wants the money bang on the 27th every month maybe it would be easier to just do a transfer every month?
  • Hi Olly,

Yes I agree. Her reaction suprised me a bit. I even offered to change the standing order to the 22nd but she wasn't happy. My deposit is protected by the way. ;)

Hope she's a better landlady than a financial expert ..... as she's talking a pile of poo! You will encounter this sort of delay with any Bank for a SO coming out Fri night into a Bank Holiday weekend. And the only way this is going to work is if you happen to use the same Bank .. and they (eg Halifax) support instant internal transfers.

Even if you go for 'a transfer every month' you're going to bump into the same problem periodically (weekends do also add time to SO transfers!) depending when the 27th falls.

It's only going to work fully for you once Faster Payments (started yesterday - but Banks phasing themselves in very slowly) are fully in. Then your SO will arrive the same day ..... but only on working days. If you post which Bank you use / she uses ....... someone will tell you (or look at all the Faster Payment threads that have suddenly sprung up) when you can send them / she can receive them (but no Banks support SOs within faster Payments until 6th June)

    Later

Apologies - you put Halifax in your title. Very much regret they won't be supporting Faster Payments outward until the Autumn! So - I would set it up as a 'Bill Payment' .... then work out (until Autumn) each month when to send it to hit her account on the 27th. But you need to allow 3 working days (from the date the Halifax calendar says the bill payment will go .. you need the funds there the night before) ... and you need to initiate the bill payment a few days (you select the date for it to go) in advance of that. Try it once - and it'll become easier - then you just use the same bill payment data the next month, as it's stored like an SO. But it's only initiated when you tell it. Sorry but paying out of Halifax is suddenly much more complex since they put their code in for Faster Payments a few weeks ago! Despite they're not using it outward for several months.

  • Hi Mikey,

Thank you so much for your reply. I'm going to take your advice and set it up as a bill
payment starting from next month. I wouldn't have thought of that. Sounds like my easiest option. Cheers!

It's the easiest option provided you don't mind doing it manually ... and you don't have an issue with funds availability (i.e waiting for salary to be paid)?

But - I would switch back to SO once Halifax are bedded in on Faster Payments. But ... even then you'll have to shoot with the wind a little and probably go for a standard date of eg 25th .... and still tweak it a little for Christmas! However - your landlady will mainly then have payments on the 25th so should be less miserable if the odd one is a day late.

Perversely Direct Debit (not possible in this case) or handing her a cheque / cash is the only certain way of getting it right! So much for technology.

  • Hi Mikey,

    Thanks again for your reply.
I don't mind doing it manually, it will be worth it to stop all this hassle every month. Can't give her cash/cheque unfortunately, she lives too far away, although the other option is to withdraw the cash from my account and deposit it in hers maybe.
I can understand her anger at being charged but she should take that up with her bank not mine.
Blimey I always seem to end up with cranky landladies/lords!! :rolleyes2

In which case .... once Halifax get fully onto Faster Payments you do then have a method (assuming you use online?) of initiating the money from your account on the 27th ... and ensuring it is in the cranky one's account same day! It's the 'immediate' type of faster payment and it runs every day ... so you avoid having to mess around with dates at weekends / BHs etc? It's a bit like a cheap ('cos it should be free) CHAPS. Does the same job but without a £30 fee.

But meantime ... you have to do it with a bill payment and adjusting the send date in order to target the 27th. But do initiate the bill payment around the 20th .... but selecting the date in the bill payment for it to go 3 working days in advance of the 27th. As Halifax have complicated the date selection just recently and you can get caught if you try to initiate a bill payment too close to the date you want it to go.

If you need in depth advice if might be worth your while going along to your local CAB office and asking there advice.
    The landlady seems very demanding.

Goodluck with sorting it, hope you find an arrangement to suit you both
