This whole topic is entirely academic. If Scotland really wants a distinctive currency (in more than name) it should join the Euro.

How else (short of UDI) can it get it's own pictures on Euro's when the rest of UK joins, unless it joins first ?

..........There are still £1 notes in circulation, or there were a couple of months ago. I got one in my change.

'twas indeed a sad day when £1 notes were replaced by these pocket wearing £1 coins, a move that undoubtedly devalued the currency and added to inflationary pressures in the economy. Despite common sense prevailing north of the border these pressures imposed by the BoE have now all but done for even the Scottish notes.

I think we here in Northern Ireland are the only country to produce plastic notes i.e. the Northern Bank £5 note :]

Sell them on eBay to Americans for £7-£8 :D

pssst Stirling is a city in Scotland, the word you need is sterling :)
  • This is how to deal with someone who is reluctant to accept Scottish Bank Notes. just say the following "Sir/Madam, I have proferred you currency guaranteed by the ROYAL Bank of Scotland and endorsed by her royal Highness. Your refusal to accept such currency is much appreciated and i assume the goods/service is free" it's amazing how quickly they change their tune when your halfway out the door!

"In ordinary everyday transactions, the term ‘legal tender’ has very little practical application."
This depends on who you're dealing with. Many years ago in the days of heavy pennies (pre-decimal) I asked a bus driver to accept 16 old pennies for 2 x 8d fares. He wouldn't take them on the grounds that he only had to accept 12 as legal tender. He did though - when I bought one 8d ticket and gave the other 8d to my friend to buy her own!

The point is that he didn't have to accept it at all, legal tender can be refused by anyone... except in settlement of a debt ordered by a court.

A bit of appeasement to Scottish MoneySavers....

Hi folks, I can see some Scottish MoneySavers are upset about this... so I've added a note to the top post and will put something in next weeks email

    Martin :)

I wouldn't worry, it seems like an overreaction. I use English notes as much as Scottish, it's a bit daft that people feel such a connection to the currency that they must defend it. Stating facts about the currency is hardly an attack on it either.

I reckon at least two thirds of the payments I make are not with legal tender. Most are with credit / debit card or bank transfer (none of which are legal tender). When I bought my paper this morning, I used 25 1p pieces, 5 2p pieces, a pound coin and the rest in silver- because of the amount of copper coins, this was again not legal tender but the shop keeper happily took it.

Again...because Legal Tender has absolutely nothing to do with what a shopkeeper can or cannot take or is or is not allowed to refuse.
