Electrical rules

Hi,

In regards to a full re-wire of a 3 bed property. Is it legal for me to put all the back boxes in, all the cables and wire up the sockets but the just get an electrician to put the consumer unit in?

I did this a few years ago but i know things have changed since then.

thanks

I think the question is whether or not you could actually find an electrician willing to do this. AFAIK you would effectively be asking the guy to stake his livelihood by certifying a complete re-wire done by a non professional.
Taking the pish if you ask me.

You need to speak to an electician first. They might accept you putting all the back boxes in place and the wires and then they just come along and connect it all up.
Or you could pay someone to inspect the installation.

    Where are you?

The wiring regs are the same all over the UK, it is only the Building Regs that differ.

As an electrician I usually run a mile from this type of work
Time can get wasted for the following reasons-
    client buys wrong stuff
client does work, but work is not of an acceptable standard
client provides stuff (usually buying on price alone) so they buy cheap tat and it takes longer to fit - with the added bonus of looking inferior.
client reads a book - or tinternet- and tells you how to do your job

Too much hassle- lots of what if factors and places to fall out over

I usually like to provide ALL materials, then I can use stuff that won't break or look poor. It becomes a in , out , job done all happy situation

Where the client wants fancy sockets I usually point them to my local wholesaler and they get decent stuff at a good discount
    baldly going on...

Hi Lauren - don't know about Scotland but if you're in England it's a bit like fitting your own double glazing; a professional electrician can self-certify their work if they were doing the whole job, but in the scenario you describe you would have to pay Building Control at your local council to inspect and sign off on the installation - the amount varies but its £200 for my council.
