Help! No mains lighting!!

On Friday evening I did something really stupid - even for me! I noticed that one of the light fittings in my dining room was missing a bulb (fitting was working fine without it), so I went into the kitchen to fins a replacement bulb. All I had under my sink was a 7w energy saving candle bulb (the fitting takes 25w candle bulbs) so I decided to use that. Now for the stupid bit - I did not turn off the lights when I attempted to replace the bulb! I stood on a chair and went to put the bulb into the holder. As the bulb made contact with the fitting all the mains lights in the house went out. All my other electricity works fine. I live in an old house, and upon checking my fuse box I noticed that my fuse wire had blown. So replaced the fusewire with 5amp fusewire, and I also replaced the 5amp fuse. I switched the power back on and still none of my mains lights work. I checked the fuse wire again and it is still intact. Please can someone advise what I should try next.

That was going to have to be my next port of call, I just wondered if someone could think of something else that I might try first. I will have to borrow some money to pay for an electrician but if it comes down to it thats what I will have to do.

You mention fusewire in the fusebox then you also mention a 5amp fuse. Where is this second fuse and have you tried replacing that too? Are you sure you've fitted the fusewire properly and fitted it back into the fusebox correctly?

  • Problem solved - my ex came round and discovered that I hadn't fitted the fuse wire correctly. He replaced it and now I have lights!
