The Mail/Express have been forecasting an imminent collapse in house prices since I first bought a house in 1996. Nearly ten years on and we're still waiting.
They're on a mission to flog more copies of their papers by preying on the fears of your average middle Englander and pave the way to a return to 1950's conservatism.
If you take your economic advice from them, you're a mug.0 -
Oh I never take economic advice from what I read in the newspapers, but this sort of headline, in whichever publication, has the potential to make the general public worry/cheer (depending on circumstances) and investigate further.
Then, when they come to realise that the house they bought last year has been losing its value monthly for around 12-14 months (source http://www.hometrack.co.uk/index.cfm?fuseaction=news.viewnewsitem&newsid=113), they may realise that things aren't quite so rosy0 -

Yeah, but for every survey that says that prices are falling there's another one that says they're not. It all depends on what agenda you're trying to push, I guess. Don't expect The Express to admit to that, though.
Eventually the papers will get it right, though, in the same way that a stopped clocked tells the right time twice a day.0
