what are flash drives for?

i have been told to buy one of them flash drive hubs or something for portable memory and to enable extra memory for the kids - what are these and how do they work please?

Basically, it is a small gizmo that plugs into a USB port on your PC (without any additional drivers for WinME and above), and gives you some storage that is removable and transportable.
They are incredibly useful, and a 256Mb one will store the same as about 170 floppies.

but you must make your own mind up about ebuyer, as reports vary. I have NEVER had any problems having said that. I have the 512Mb Kingston Data Traveller 2 from ebuyyer, and it is excellent - no longer on free shipping though!
Apart from storing your documents, and so on, you can store some programs that you could then run on any PC you could connect to:-
