No bill for 6 years!

Hiya,

Was wondering if anyone could help me with the following. My friends have been renting a workshop for 6 years, they have never had an electricity bill and assumed the electricity was included in the rent payment. Now the electricity company have rung and asked for the meter serial numbers and current readings and have said that they have not been billed for the last 6 years! Can the electricity company now bill them for the whole 6 years as it's their mistake? Apparantly the meter has been read regularly which led them to believe it was paid by the landlord. They have no written tenancy agreement it was all a casual affair and they say if they get a 6 year bill it will probably send them under. Anybody have anything similiar or know what they can expect next?

Thanks.
