Oops... I had new windows & doors fitted a few months ago, and now need a lot of repointing doing. Ah well. I

What's the going rate for repointing these days? Can anyone recommend anyone in the Yorkshire area?

    Many thanks...

    Not to worry, it happens.

Sorry can't recommend anyone in the Yorkshire area but prices do vary a lot.

You can expect to pay anything between £12 and £25 per square metre for grinding out and re-pointing.

    Hope this helps.

Yes, that's useful info, thanks :)

Out of interest, a couple more questions for your knowlegable brain, if you don't mind...?

-I've heard conflicting opinions on how best to grind out. Some say it has to be done by hand (eg raked/chiseled out) as using machinery can damage the bricks (my joints are quite slim, as house is circa 1920), but others say using an angle-grinder or similar (with a thin cutter) should be fine. Any comments?

-One guy recommended after re-pointing to coat the walls with Thompsons Waterseal product, or similar. Do you think this makes much difference, and if so, is it worth it?

-Scaffolding. This seems to add considerably to the job, but I appreciate it's probably essential these days. What's the going rate for this? (how is it worked out, per square metre?) and did the prices you quoted include scaffolding, or not?

    Many thanks :)

I've been putting this off for years, so it would be nice to have all the facts before I proceed!

If you want it taken out with a hammer & chisel, expect to pay £35+ per square metre.

The angle grinder is the most used method and is fine in the right hands.

Scaffolding is a health and safety requirement. However, a lot of pointing companies have their own tower scaffolds and include them within the rate.

Most builders would laugh at Thomsons Waterseal but I have used it a few times and it has worked a treat. It is particularly useful on the modern porous brick.

If you have an older house with dense 'stock' brick, you would not need it.

    All the best
