How do you insure 2 cars??

Hi, I am having a new car delivered on Saturday and the car sales needed an insurance cover note from me to tax the car. I have just phoned my insurance company to insure the new car which they are changing over from my existing car at no extra cost but when I said that I needed to insure my existing car for about a month until I sell it they wanted £96 for 1 month!! The yearly was only £202!!
Is it legal to go to another company, insure my existing car for a year and then just cancel it when I sell it?
Thanks everybody

Problem I have also faced in the past - It's legal but it may well cost you more, any NCD you have can only apply to one car, and you will probably face short term penalty charges for cancelling a policy so soon after starting it with another Insurer.
Costly on the face of it - but it may just be cheaper with your existing Insurer and live in hope you sell the car soonerIf many little people, in many little places, do many little things,
they can change the face of the world.

Might be worth giving them a try? Not tried them myself, but the quote I had for a week seemed fairly cheap.
I think there is Quidco as well??Quidco Earnings (since Dec 06): £467.750 -
Not sure who you are buying from, but when I purchased my car from Ford, I was asked to get a 1 week insurance quote. This was so the dealer could tax it, i just passed him the policy number, and also so they could sell me the latter. Not sure if your vendor provides the same, might be worth checking in with.
Not sure about the option to "not insure" the spare car, and drive it on 3rd party other cars basis (Assume you are allowed to do the latter by your ins policy, should check obviously)0 -

Careful
The "Driving Other Cars" extension
- was originally intended for emergency uses only - thus the restriction to RTA cover only
- if it exists under a policy it only allows the policyholder to drive other cars
- BUT ONLY - cars that do not belong to him/her and are not hired to them under a hire purchase agreement.
The misunderstandings that have grown up around this cover mean that more recently (what was historically part of most car insurance policies) has led to some insurers no longer offering it at all and those that do don't offer it to everyone. If many little people, in many little places, do many little things,
they can change the face of the world.

Pleeeeeeeeeease do NOT do this even if your policy covers "other cars".... the "Other Car" must not be owned by you, and MUST be insured by someone else.
Picture the situation of you driving your "other" car to the shop and parking it on the road...the second you step out of the car the 3rd party liabilty ends. the handbrake then fails and mows down a child... You are NOT covered and its against the law for YOU the owner to leave an uninsured car on the road.0 -

This is only true if your policy specifically says so, although as TTTCOP says there are intrinsic issues if you are leaving it unattended on the street.0
