Prepaid electricity meter

Hi
advice needed please, son has just moved into flat with prepaid gas/electric meters. Every time he loads up electric he 'loses' £5 can anybody explain why this happens?

    It goes on as 'emergency' credit, so he hasn't lost it as you can use the emergency if the normal credit runs out.

    Has he phoned and told the suppliers that he has moved in?
    Another option to EC would be that the previous tenant was paying a balance back throught the meters.
    You cna check by looking at screen 27 on the gas meter and S on the electricity meter.
