Just been on sky, the Daily Mirror & Mail are now reporting the massive changes in road tax from next April.

Apprently there is a revolt of labour MPs about these changes, SKY are saying it's because they know they are out of a job.

Just a shame, Sky reported than a 7 year old Mondeo will cost £440 a year to tax when it never will.

Its about time they woke up on this subject.

They have been on the radio all morning banging on about the need to protect the environment (still very flawed science see:- http://www.sepp.org/publications/NIPCC-Feb%2020.pdf).

Point to note is that car ownership in China is 20 vehicles per 1,000 head of population whilst in the USA it's 950!

I wonder if the fuel protests will work but I imagine it will turn the spotlight more on the retrospective VED they are about to apply.

Yes, its about time someone did something about this. The fact the this tax is being applied retrospectively to cars registered since 2001 is outrageous and the assertion by some MPs that this is an environmental tax is completely bogus.

I've written to my MP on this already - I would suggest that everybody else does the same - especially if you live in a labour constituency.

There was a flurry about this a couple of weeks ago, containing reasoning from only one viewpoint, suggesting that people in older cars will virtually all have to pay more tax, which isn't actually true.

I'd be glad for the changes to be backdated even further, as my road tax would then drop from £185 to £115, and some other older cars would qualify for £35 or zero tax. None of this would make these cars worthless, as hysterical articles claim.

There have been graduated scales for years, and it really can't be a surprise that the top end is on the way up.

Not everyone has the luxury of being able to use a small car. Some of the worst hit will be people who drive family cars like Modeos etc.

The problem with this tax is that its retrospective. The cars are already on the road and the higher tax wont mean that people will go out and scrap their cars as they will loose even more money. Even if they did scrap their cars there wouldn't be enough cars in the lower tax brackets to replace them. There are no environmental benefits to this retrospective tax.

This is noting more than a tax grab from people at a time when budgets are being stretched because of price rises. I think people have every right to get upset.

    My favourite subject:mad:

I drive a 2003 1.4 automatic Corsa and as of April next year my tax will go up to about £280 - it will be in the same bands as some of the big 4X4 'gas guzzlers'. The reason for this, for some reason in 2003 Vauxhall did something to their automatic engines and they give out really high emmissions. When I got the car in 2004, this wasn't a problem but as soon as they changed the way the tax was done - boom, up wnt the price!! If I look at the same car, but a 2004 model, the tax is £145!!!!!!

I can't afford to change by car, so I'm stuck with it:mad:
