Welcome to MSE and sorry to hear about what has happened to you.
Your bank isn't liable if you give away your security details to a fraudster.
Most banks have tended to refund amounts stolen by fraudsters in such circumstances, but I don't see that the FOS will force them to do so.
Phishing e-mails are really, really obvious. They have common features:
- they are never addressed to you by name;
- they always contain ridiculous stories like "we are updating our security so please tell us all of your account details";
- the website link they ask you to click is always hosted on some blatantly non-bank domain (e.g. NatwestBank.onlineverification.com which clearly isn't a genuine NatWest site).
Whilst I used to be able to see why people were taken in by them, I really can't any more. There's simply been too much publicity about them.0 -

How do you know the bank will not give you the money back? Have you been to appeal?
We had a similar thing happen to us and we have just appealed to the bank for our money back. Would be really intertested to know what happened in your case.0 -
Have to admit though, i near got sucked in twice by phishing one time was for MSN account...I had to update the account or it would be terminated...so I opened the link and proceeded to fill form out until it asked me for a credit/debit card no. i thought oh yeah..I dont pay for msn doh! its auto free with windows..so I just closed the link and dismissed it...some years later, well recent actually I had same thing from Nationwide..I got as far as the memorable information...closed the link..took down the sender info..and passed it on to Nationwide straight away..hey presto but no damage done..
You will be lucky if your bank pays out, as its noted on all forms of communication and online banking..."YOUR BANK" will never ask for your personal details passwords or pin numbers via email. But good luck anyway.0 -
Appeal was successful!
Fingers crossed for you cwa750 .
