Yes you do need practice, but there is also a great tip. You will need Fairy Liquid and a wet rage.
Cut the nozzel on the tube fairly small. Now, really you should actually push mastic (silicon actually) into the joint, pushing the tube away from you as you go, but most people - me included- pull it towards us. Once the silicon is in place, liberally cover the tip of your finger in Fairy Liquid, and use that finger tip to firmly smooth the silicon out. Dont be too firm, but enough just creaste a small concave finish to it. The silicon will not stick to your finger due to the Fairy. Once you have a little build up on your finger, wipe it off on the rag, fairy your finger again and carryon. With the fairy on your finger you can safely smooth over any rough bits of the silicon.

    Hope this helps

Woodys way is one way of doing it. Buy yourself a Magnum Ice cream. The stick is the bit you need. I apply it as woody does but then use a spray bottle with 30:70 mix of washing up liquid and water. Spray liberally all over the silicon and smooth off with the lolly stick. Always works a treat for me and looks professional as you get nice even edges which isn't always the way with your finger.

The trick is to push the silicone and not pull it.The hardest part is to get the right amount on which is a combination of nozzle size, how much pressure you apply to the gun handle and how fast you move the thing along. It takes LOTS of practice.Doesnt matter which method you use to finish it off(finger or lollystick, whatever). If you have applied too much silicone then you will get a mess.
