getting rid of smoke stains/smells in room

turning hubbies computer/storage room into a nursery for new baby which arrives in a few weeks. hubbie has been smoking in room and obviosuly now the room smells and has smoke stained walls.
I presume if I paint all the walls, clean carpet etc this will get rid of the smells and stains. Does anyone need to know if I need to paint something on the walls first to get cover any stains and stop them coming through once I have painted? Or will a coat of paint be enough?
Any other tips greatfully appreciated

Nicotine stains do seep through emulsion paint. I would recommend old-fashioned sugar soap solution to wash down every surface (available as a dissolvable powder or ready-mixed solution). Stubborn stains on the ceiling can be covered with gloss paint, and then emusion on top.
Obviously your husband will be doing this - no working off step ladders in your condition!"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0 -
Nicotine livens up big time when emulsioned. If it’s not too bad sugar soap is good, I’ve always used an oil based undercoat if it’s really bad, and I’d definitely use an oil based undercoat for the ceiling. Maybe invest in an ioniser for where your hubby chooses to smoke – I’m sure they make a difference in drawing nicotine away, or kick him outside to smoke away from little baby!0

vinegar. apart from repainting or sugar soaping, put uncovered containers of vinegar in the room. removes the smell of both ciggies and new paint. and yes, get him to do the work............ :rotfl:0
