Kitchen from Homebase

Hello everyone - me and my girlfreind have just bought a house and this forum seems like a wealth of info so we'll be on here quite a bit over the next few months!

Anywayz we are getting a new kitchen (14 'amalfi' units, built in oven, 2 under-unit lights, sink and taps, gas hob and extractor) from homebase, (we haven't shopped around too much but this seems ok?)

This price for materials comes to £2905 which we think is fair, but..

The installation quote is £4200 which we are a bit shocked at.
It's a pretty simple kitchen (3.9m x 2.7m) and we are having a U shaped design, we a reputting in a built-in oven and dishwasher which didnt exist before and a couple of new plug sockets but this still seems very expensive? (note the installation does not include wall or floor tiling)

We live in Truro, Cornwall and do not really know any good tradesmen.

Can anyone advise on the above? And what we would expect to be paying

Thanks

    OMFG.

I am just fitting a kitchen for someone, which includes taking part of a stud wall down, fitting new linings, replacing the kitchen floor fitting the kitchen and tiling above worktops to underside of wall units.

I have quoted £2100 which includes ripping out the old too.

The quote you have seems extortionate.

Shame you aint a bit closer to Plymouth, as I would have quoted for you.

If i was quoting for that i'd be surprised if it was more than 1500.The price you have been quoted is ridiculous but doesn't surprise me.Most of the major stores rip customers off and the fitting is hit and miss at best.Get a local independent fitter to do it and try to get someone on recommendation.

Snap - we had a quote for materials for £2900 and 3k for installation. With homebase you get 2 years workmanship guaranteed, but they're still taking the p*ss with these extorniate prices for installalling.

We're getting the kitchen from Homebase and finding our kitchen fitter seperately.

Check your PM Lukey, I've sent you details of a kitchen fitter who lives 10 minutes away from Truro.

    Cheers,

    Tez

Thanks for your help everyone and thanks for the contact tez - we'll get a few quotes I think!

I'm surprised Homebase rip off customers so badly with installation.. the sales lady was given us the spiel about them being award winning and how hard it is to get this award, but surely that doesn't mean much if they are just sub-contracting it out!?

Kitchen fitting is so easy its unbelievable, homebase like other companies rely on the fact that people think its difficult, when in reality a decent (proper) tradesman will fit a kitchen in o time at all.
  • Doesn't surprise me at all. Most of these so called awards are made up anyway. They simply get people like me to fit them, give us a percentage and trouser the rest.I wouldn't work for the big stores if it was the only work going.

    Hi there,

Sorry I can't help you with fitting costs, but can I suggest you use this site for comparing the cost of your appliances your getting from Homebase. Just click on appliances and then chose your sub heading and go from there. It's a great site and I've used it a few times now.

The double oven I wanted for my kitchen was £729 from both Homebase and B&Q but when I went onto Deal Pond I found it for over £235 cheaper.

I then did the same for my hob and oven hood and saved over £500 in all. The best bit about it was I got Homebase to price promise against the web as the cheaper prices were available at Boots and Sainsbury's online but I told Homebase you could order in store (which I honestly don't know if you can do to this day, but then again neither did they.) and as they didn't stock the products to take away the terms were the same as Boots and Sainsbury's would need to order for me too.

The upshot here was I got web prices less their 10% price promise in a written quotation and then went to B&Q and got them to price promise against Homebase's price promise successfully.

    Total saving on double oven Original Price £729, Web Price £493 - 10% (Homebase price promise) = £386.10 - 10% = £347.49 so a saving of £381.51 on just the double oven!!! :D :j :D

Edit - here's the double oven here at B&Q online

and the same oven here from dealpond starting at £499 from Kitchen Science

Kitchen Fitting isn't rocket science, just be really careful with your plumbing, and your worktop cutting can be tricky (unlesss you butt joint it (not attractive)) oviously dont be tempted to do gas yourself.

Unless you are confident go to a local joiner ask their advice on where to go. Homebase units are flat pack but many merchants units are pre-assembled, many joiners will build this into your quote (saves time).
    That mrs macchicken to you!
