Basics of gas and electric suppliers

I understand that a tarrif is the unit of energy you consume but why is certain tarrifs cheaper then other's for the same supplier ?

I think British Gas have six tarrifs.

There are several units for energy, a tariff is not one of them.
The amount of energy you use is recorded in Kilowatt Hours.
The tariff is the amount the company charges you for this.
There are so many because they are trying to attract different types of customer.
Low users, high users, on-line accounts, Green, RSPB, Argos, direct debits, prepayment meter rates etc.

Easiest way is to use a price comparison site. 7 such sites are listed above in the gas & electricity resource bar.
