I am with Scottish Power Economy 7 . My house is all electric and I tried to change suppliers. They said because my house has 2 seperate meters (one for peak and one for off peak) I can't move. Has anyone heard of this.

Never heard of it, maybe the person you spoke too didn't understand the meter readings so fobbed you off!!! Try calling again & speaking to a superviser. Sorry if I sound bitter, but I used to work for an energy company so know most of the CSA's don't know what they are doing. The suplier is who you pay your bills too, so the type of meter should make no difference.

We have 2 meters one peak one off peak but we also have gas.
I wonder if it is something to do with dual fuel

    Sounds odd to me.
I am with scottish power economy 7, I switched from Npower last year with no problems.
Suggest you call them back and get them to explain to you again why you cant switch.
All that happens when you switch is you give meter readings to old and new supplier.

    I'm equally confused.

Who said you can't switch? Scottish Power? If so ignore them. Just go to whoever you want to switch to and ask them to take over your supply contract.

My parents are with Scottish Power, they have white meter heating and like you 2 electric meters. I tried to switch them over to Atlantic some months ago and Scottish Power would not permit the switch, they said that they owned the meters..... Parents are now on Scottish Powers capped energy until 2011 and not too bothered but I cannot see Scottish Power owning the meters, it sounds odd to me.

With a triple bill system I was told some time ago that changing to a new supplier meant paying for a new meter. So stuck with Scottish Power.

Thanks for all your replies. I was told by PowerGen and Scottish Hydro that they can't switch me to them because of the 2 seperate meters I have. The meters do have labels on them saying that they are Scottish Powers, so maybe your notes about that mean they own the meters in my house!

Oh well, will have to stick with it!

  • I too have 2 x meters - normal energy meter and a white meter for cheap electricity for my storage heaters (from midnight to 06.00am) but the problem is that there is a top up boost at 16.00-17.00 every day and no other Supplier has the facility for this - so it looks like I too am stuck with Scottish Hydro forever?

Seems like you have similar [and not solvable] problem as here, all to do with MPAN meters, which I know nothing about
