Squeaky Door Hinges

I don't sleep well, never have. And through the night I go outside a lot. I live in a flat so let myself into the communal hallway at all sorts of odd hours all through the night (just been outside now and it's 4.10am).
I'm really quiet. You would never hear me. Silent, like a mouse. I don't even turn lights on. I'm quite happy pottering about in the dark. However, my front door hinges are starting to squeak like a good 'un!!
Now, this is a money saving site ... so I wondered if I could just use one of my cooking oils to shut it up? I've got olive oil and cheapo vegetable oil.
Or am I just a mad woman with no sense of DIY and I need to go get WD-40 before insects are drawn to the oil?
Thanking you in anticipation (as is my next door neighbour no doubt)

Don't use Cooking Oils they get stickey and may make things worse in the long run.
Try a cheep bar of soap, Hold it firmly against the hinge and open / close it a few times to work the soap into the joins...
Or some Vaseline (or Petroleum jelly)Laters

I've got no soap (that makes me sound like a right dirty bird doesn't it)!
I've got washing up liquid or shower gel. I do have liquid soap, if that's the same thing as a bar)
Would they work?
No Vaseline/petroleum jelly either (not gay or owt you see!)0 -
I would suggest asking about to the pople on the other flats / is there a communal cleaner for the public areas and see if they have any wd 40 or 3 in 1 type oil, and quick squirt, job done.
May also be an idea to ask anyone in the car parking area if they have any in their car.Breast Cancer Now 100 miles October 2022 100 / 100miles

Hi,
what about a squirt of furniture polish (you might have some of that), :rotfl:, worked in and wipe off excess.
It's also handy for sticky plastic curtain rails, spray unto cloth and run along rail, speeds up opening and closing.0 -
Do not use washing up liquid, or really WD40. Both will thin the existing grease that is on there and make the situation worse after a very short time.
Furinture polish that contains silicon can be used, although personally I wouldn't recommend it. Buy a simple can of 3 in 1 oil or idealy a little grease and gentle put into the hinge sections. Open and close the door whislt applying it. It will stop it squeeking for a long time.
You may find though, that on a communial door, it has either heavy duty or ballbearing hinges, in which case they are wearing and what ever you do will be a short term fix.

One neighbour came in at 4.45am.
Another went out at 5.01am.
So tricky to catch them.
And there are at least 3 empty here (out of 8). Never even seen the other people.
There are rarely cars in the car parking area, so again, no people.0 -

Looks like I have to buy furniture polish then as it's been mentioned twice an can be used for a few things. If I buy oil for this one job I'll never have to use it again on anything, so loathe to do that.
It is my front door, leading onto the communal entrance; not the communal door.0 -
well buy a Chip butty from the local chipshop
use the roll to spread butter in the hinges
:D
and then eat the chips!Laters
