Hi

Would someone be able to point me in the direction of a idiots guide for interpreting gas bills please e.g. what a kilowatt per hour is etc. Also, I'm interested in whether information exists as to what would be average usuage per quarter etc.

As you might guess I've got a bill that just doesn't seem possible; I work away five days a week, the only gas I use is central heating and this is switched off all week and then on a few hours over the weekend. My latest bill says I've used 6937.38 kilowatt hours over 90 days, yet my upstairs neighbout (same property type as mine) who has his on 7 days a week and virutally day and night has used half the consumption and obvioulsy has half the bill so something just isn't right.

Any help gratefully received

For gas a kWh costs between 2p and 3p depending on your tariff.

The average house uses 20,500kWh a year for Central heating and hot water and the majority of this is obviously in the 6 winter months. (I use over 70%)

So your 6937kWh for a winter quarter is certainly not excessive when compared to the UK average - in fact it is a bit on the low side.

However it does seem high for your pattern of usage.

The most likely reason is that your bill has been based on estimated meter readings either for the initial reading, or the last reading.

If they are estimated it will be denoted by an (E) after the reading.
