For the record I regularly work from home and use a VPN on Virgin's network without any trouble.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

"The thing to watch out for with download speed is MB (megabyte) vs Mb (megabit) arguement

    1MB = 8mb

The connection speed is quoted as Mb, were as file download speeds are normally quoted in MB

Therefore a figure quoted in Mb needs to be divided by 8 to get the real MB figure."

Does this mean the 20Mb figure virgin quotes is really 2.5MB? So slower than BT's maximum 8MB?

    Thank you so much!

Thats invaluable information to me - I would hate to get tied into the contract (although I think they have a 28 day cancellation period?) and find I couldn't claim it back from work and then have to pay it myself.

    lol no.

Broadband speed is measured in bits. Same as mph.
Data size is measured in bites. Same as miles.

    Understand?

If you are using the CISCO VPN Client then it should be ok, CISCO ad-hoc VPN connections use UDP protocol, I have setup many VPN's both site to site and ad-hoc (remote user) and engineers, directors use all over the world without any issues.
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

I just want to make sure I am comparing like for like, thats all.

So I can compare BT's 8MB speed to Virgins 20MB speed - ie if they both performed to the maximum capacity, Virgin would be about 2.5 times faster???

Incidently, for example say I wanted to download 100MB of data, how long would that take if I had full speed from Virgins 20MB?

This would be a good site to read. You can use a VPN through your router, but look at the STM section in regard to the amount of data you transfer (both up and download)

Yup BB is always measured in bits, so VM 20mbit is about 2.5 mbyte.
    BT 8mbit is about 1mbyte.

However the actual speed will be slightly slower due to overheads (even in ideal conditions), and may be affected by other factors.

VPN isn't technically supported by Virgin, but that just means they don't offer tech support for it specifically (much the same as they won't offer tech support for Skype, or PS3's etc), it should work fine though.

100MB of data should take about 40 seconds or so with Virgin 20mb if there are no problems.
