I would have thought that if they have "written" to you, you are not succesfull!

Usually, they will call you and go through about 15 security questions and then tell you that you have been successfull and tell you that you need to give ID or passprt/DL number and they will also tell you your credit limit.

I'm sorry to say that if they have written to you and won't tell you any more on the phone, it seems like they have declined you.

How is your credit? Obviously not that great as you have needed to apply for a Vanquis card but is it REALLY BAD????

Have you checked your credit file? You can get your equifax file online with a credit score for £6.50 with th especial promational code (usually £12.95).

If you have just got a current account with cheque book/guarantee card, your credit can't be THAT bad at all.

But it will be worth checking.

If Vanquis HAVE declined you (and they might not have, might just be a security measure) then there will be something wrong with your credit file cos usually if they can't give you a visa card, they will offer you a visa electron.

Let me know either way please.

    Thanks

Have you had your current account, debit card and cheque book a while? Or have you recently applied and been approved for them?

  • Hi

Have you tried applying to Capital One?

After previous advice on here and bad cedit history myself I found they accepted me quite quickly. They even allowed me to set my own credit limit at first, they originally offered something rediculous (to me) scarily in the thousands £ but I said no all I wanted was £200 max so I knew if necessary I could pay it off without getting into trouble (I might have had to miss out on a few luxuries at the supermarket but not as bad as getting hit with interest) however they were pleased to oblige and I have never had to scrape by and always met repayments even if I pay so much a wek. A few times I have even found I have been in credit with them as paid too much! After 7 months of good behaviour with repayments in full each month they have recently increased my limit.

Personaly I only use it to use as a stop gap when I need more time to pay for things or simply as a way to pay a bill online or over the telephone. I keep a record of each payment and usually put the money in a tin as I spend it so its ready to repay.

My husband recently applied for a Vanquis card and he had no problems and they were quite quick to reply.

Good luck and keep us updated if you can.

    Thanks

    :)

This doesn't really make sense, you say they offered you thousands and you rejected it and asked for £200, but then after 7 months of good behaviour they increased your credit limit? Surely if you wanted a higher credit limit, you could have had it to start off with? Or if they had to wait for 7 months while you were on good behaviour, they shouldn't have offered it to you in the beginning?

I may have misunderstood it, I usually do, probably just me being think again LOL

  • Hi its ok I never seem to make much sense on these boards LOL!

Ill try to explain what I mean. I applied to them direct without being sent a special offer letter or anything. I asked on here for advice and someone told me to try Capital One, so with much thought, I did.

They were offering to accept me with a starting credit limit of around £2,000 but I refused and asked them to reduce it as all I wanted was a card for emergencies and to purchase stuff on the web (e-bay / paypal etc) and over the telephone (theatre tickets etc). Mainly due to the fact my bank refuses to upgrade my account and allow me the use of a Debit Card and Chequebook!

They understood and asked how much I wanted so I suggested £200 as I knew I could repay this back as previously explained without too much of a struggle without falling behind too far with other financial comitments. I have not ever reached £200 limit therefore it has been quite easy to keep a track of spending. Especially when I immediately put the money in the repayment pot. In effect I do generally try to follow this rule of if you cant afford it now dont have it.
Although sometimes its unavoidable say for example its a week till 'pay day' and we have no food in the house!

They recently increased my credit limit without me requesting it. It was a shock to me to receive my latest statement and find I had so much extra to 'spend'.

I am currently contemplating whether to request a decrease or keep hold of the limit as I also need a regular repayment to pay a bill but my bank account wont be able to cope with the 1 big payment each month. However if I can 'save' each week I can afford the monthly repayment. Hence I could use the credit card to pay the monthly £180 bill and put by in the pot £45 a week. If that makes sense? Alternatively if I find one week I cannot make up the £45 then I can put it on the credit card and make up for it later?

Alternatively I can try and acquire another credit card with a different place and use this to set up the regular payment, I can request a £200 limit and keep a tight control for sole use. Trouble is no one ever aproaches me with special introductory offers. The credit card world is a minefield to me!

Hope this makes better sense now?

    Sorry if I dont!
