Graduating student and benefits

I live on my own and completely independently and will be 25 in august. Im a nhs student so receive a bursary my final one being third friday in august. However, I finish my training on 1st August and cannot register with the health professions council and therefore start work properly until beginning of October and I would then have a huge gap with no bursary money coming in until my first wage packet (when I get a job) so I wont get anything towards paying rent, bills, food and travel to work. I cannot get a overdraft or loan due to bad credit record so im really going to be stuck. Im not really sure what I should do.

You could get a temporary job to tide you over.

My placement want me to work for free for five weeks for august as im still 'insured' by the bursary and its a sweetner to get me a job so i'll probably have to do that. A temporary job would be great if there were anything around here - I was unemployed for six months before going to uni and couldnt get any work and the job situation has worsened here, I will be looking out for something obviously but need to know if there is anything else I can do if there arent any jobs.

I don't really know anything about benefits, but I would just say that you can't afford to work for free, even though you would love the job.

come on anywhere has jobs as long as you're not too proud to take them and you could probably even take on some extra hours now to help save up a bit of cash for when you need it in the autumn. There's always jobs going with flexible hours in pubs/bars, shops, McDonalds, supermarkets etc and if you choose carefully you can get staff discounts which with the likes of supermarkets could help you save even more cash elsewhere.

Things must seem so black and white but my world is tinged with grey at the moment - having gone to town yesterday and visited every shop, fast food outlet and supermarket and being told that they werent currently recruiting or needed staff during weekdays only thats a no go. When asked what about in the summer I was told they had existing student staff that would work full time for them during that time.
I simply can't take on extra hours at the moment. 6.30am I leave home to get the bus to hospital, 7.30 I get the connecting bus to the hospital im training at currently, 8am till 6pm im working in theatres all day training, approximately 7pm I get to my parents house who are disabled, I cook them dinner and make sure they are ok before going back to my house doing an hour or so of study and going to bed - thats five days a week. Weekends are the only chance I get for revision and study. I wish I had the energy let alone the time to work a shift a week at the moment.

Fingers crossed beginning of september I can find and begin a job very quickly -and pride doesnt come into it, ive applied for cleaning, supermarket, factory all sorts of jobs in the past and most of the time the agency have come back to me saying they dont want a graduate as they feel you're too qualified for the position and are unlikely to stay. (I graduated in 2004).

What course are you doing, and why can't you register until October?

You will be able to sign on and get Housing Benefit once your course has officially finished, although receiving a bursary payment after that will complicate matters. However, that being the case you could do 3 free weeks for your placement if you actually want to do that.

Can you not get bank Health Care Assistant work? That's what most NHS students do, both during and after their course.

Though no-one can go back and make a brand-new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand-new ending.

    Mel.

Im doing Operating Department Practice, the final results come out end of September and the uni send them directly to the health professions council which issue your pin number beginning of october. I would do bank hca but they are currently downgrading odp/nurse jobs at the moment at my hospital so until thats been sorted they arent taking on any new agency/bank staff in any department (ive tried but its all very political here at the moment, the lady in charge of the bank has been told theres a freeze on new staff). I think its because exisiting staff are going on the bank to do extra shifts to make up for the loss in their wages.

There is always always jobs as a carer avalible and with your CRB check already done I guess as you have been doing NHS work then I bet they will ite your hand off. Get on to all the nursing homes etc in the area. Plus waht about bank carer work at the hospital?
